Salesmen, teachers, cleaners, or maybe drivers? Probably, each of us can name the most “expected” professions in the ranking of the most performed in our country. This year, the Central Statistical Office presented a one-off publication entitled “Diversification of occupations on the labour market in Poland”, which contains data resulting from experimental work.
As we can read on the GUS website:
“(...) the aim was to provide detailed information on the occupations performed by 14.1 million workers in the national economy and 1.4 million people working solely on the basis of contract and related contracts. The data show results for 443 occupational groups, as of 31.12.2024.
The GUS material presents not only the occupational structure by gender and age, but also separate chapters devoted to the professions performed by foreigners and the scale of employment in professions most susceptible to automation and the development of artificial intelligence. In the publication we can also look at spatial analyses, which provide — for selected professional groups — data on which municipalities and with what frequency the given professions occur. In addition, the professional structure is divided into feminized and masculinized professions, the oldest and youngest demographic profiles of individual occupational groups and professions most often performed by people of retirement age and under 26 years of age.
Top 10 most frequently performed professions in Poland
In the Polish national economy, the predominant professional groups are shopkeepers and cashiers, as well as truck drivers, storekeepers and primary school teachers. Together, these groups represent 13.5% of all occupations present on the labour market. However, if we were to present in graphic form the “top 10”, presenting the most frequently performed professions in Poland, it would look like this:

Women to care, men to build? Professions by gender and age
The labour market is still very diverse in terms of gender. Women predominate in professions related to the health care and education sectors. Among the most feminized professions are midwives, specialists in the upbringing of young children and dental assistants. Among men, occupations that primarily require physical strength predominate — the most masculinized are miners, bricklayers, agricultural machine operators and roofers. A balanced gender structure can be noted primarily among shop owners, bakers and confectioners, domestic service workers and chefs.
The average age of workers varies markedly between occupational groups. The youngest are fast food workers and athletes and jockeys — their average age is 29 years. The oldest group consists of specialist doctors and specialist dentists, whose average age is 56 and 55 years, respectively. The high average age also applies to nurses with specialist titles, judges and clergy, among others.
In which professions do foreigners most often work in Poland?
Foreigners constitute a significant group of people working in Poland. Among them, Ukrainian citizens predominate, who make up almost 68% of all foreigners working in Poland. Among men, the most popular profession is a truck driver, which also belongs to the deficit professions. Women make up 37% of all foreigners working in Poland and most often find employment as shop saleswomen, warehouse workers and cleaners.
In the case of people working exclusively on the basis of contract contracts and related occupations, the most frequently performed professions are helpers and cleaners and workers performing simple work in industry. Together, these two groups account for nearly 10% of those working under such contracts.
