The Role of Leaders in Promoting DEI

More and more companies and organizations are recognizing the value of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and are choosing to implement them.

The Role of Leaders in Promoting DEI

In this article, we will not only explain what DEI is, but also show how leaders can effectively implement these principles. This process includes a number of institutional solutions aimed at improving the functioning of workplaces. DEI is an acronym for three English words: diversity, equity, and inclusion. The implementation of the DEI strategy aims to create a work environment that benefits all workers, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, religion or sexual orientation, and to build a positive work culture.

DEI in the Workplace — Assumptions

As is clear from the definition of the term 'DEI', this strategy aims to achieve three key objectives, namely to ensure:

Diversities: which consists in appreciating and highlighting differences between people, such as gender, age, religion or sexual orientation, and on the principle that no one should be excluded because of their identity.

Equality/Justice: which focuses on ensuring that everyone has a fair chance of growth and success, regardless of gender, background or personal characteristics.

Inclusions: which means actively involving people from different social groups, recognising the values of each person and ensuring that everyone is accepted in the workplace.

Why is implementing DEI in the workplace so necessary?

Creating a diverse, fair and inclusive work environment benefits both companies and employees. The DEI strategy aims to:

  • Increase employee involvement_check.
  • Creating a sense of common purpose.
  • Creating an environment conducive to development, innovation, creativity and the exchange of ideas.

The portal “factorialhr”, specialized in human resources issues, emphasizes that the achievement of these goals improves the comfort and well-being of employees, which translates into their greater commitment and productivity. This, in turn, benefits the entire company.

TechTarget's Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) 2023 survey, cited by Forbes, shows:

  • 75% of leaders believe that the implementation of the DEI strategy has a very positive impact on the competitive position of the company;
  • 68% of leaders see a significant positive impact of DEI on brand perception
  • 64% of leaders see a strong positive impact on the recruitment process.

How leaders can support DEI

There are many strategies that employers and leaders can implement to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment, thereby realizing the concept of DEI. Key actions include:

Establishment of DEI as core values of the company: This action promotes the ideas of diversity, equality and inclusion, placing them at the center of organizational culture.

Creating diverse recruitment teams: This ensures that the recruitment process is inclusive and supports diversity in the workplace.

Introduction of thematic trainings, e.g. on stereotypes: These trainings are designed to raise employees' awareness of bias and promote a more inclusive work environment.

Promoting awareness of the pay gap and introducing equal pay: This action implements the idea of justice, providing remuneration independent of their gender or origin.

Summary

Implementing a DEI strategy in the workplace has numerous benefits for both employers and employees. Policies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion can significantly improve the comfort and efficiency of employees, as well as increase their creativity. This in turn translates into benefits for employers, in the form of higher profits and a better perception of the company in the market.

To this end, leaders can implement many systemic solutions at a formal level (e.g. inclusion of the DEI value in the company's charter) or systemic (creation of a diverse recruitment team and conducting training and integration)
