Working in the offshore sector usually requires appropriate certifications and training. However, it does not only cover technical professions such as engineers, safety officers or tool operators. There will also be jobs in administration, catering and hospitality. The development of the Polish offshore sector is mainly focused on the construction of offshore wind farms, around which activities related to the acquisition of renewable energy are concentrated. Although working at sea is associated with inconvenience, effort and difficult conditions, it also represents an opportunity for professional development and promotion. Poland is currently focusing on the Green Transformation, and the development of offshore wind farms is one of its key elements. Therefore, the job market offers opportunities for retraining and encourages the consideration of studies related to energy or security.
Practical tips:
Step 1 Do research: Explore Polish and foreign sources to learn about the specifics of offshore professions, their requirements, working conditions, salaries and necessary qualifications.
Step 2 Check or get an education: Some offshore jobs require specialized skills confirmed by a diploma, such as engineering or marine biology. Professions such as a builder or mechanic are also valued in this industry. Do not forget about other positions, such as accountants.
Step 3 Get the appropriate certificates: – OPITO Certificate: Issued by the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation, covers safety and emergency response standards necessary for offshore work. — BOSIET Certificate: Basic training course in maritime safety, including helicopter evacuation, firefighting and first aid.
Step 4
Select a training provider: In Poland, OPITO and BOSIET courses can be done in several renowned centres, such as the Maritime Academy in Gdynia, Gdynia Maritime School, the Maritime Rescue Training Centre (OSRM) or Falck Safety Services Polska (RelyOn Nutec).
Step 5
Apply for a job and start networking: In addition to sending resumes, it is worth building contacts with people in the industry, for example through LinkedIn or attending industry events.
What should you take care of when working in the offshore sector? Offshore work requirements are different from typical onshore conditions. In addition to obtaining certificates, it is necessary to take care of a holistic approach to your health and safety, that is, welfare (Wellbeing). It includes:
- state of health, physical condition and fitness of the body,
- mental balance, a sense of meaning in life and the ability to cope with stress,
- quality of social relations and support of the environment,
- financial security,
- spiritual harmony and values professed,
- concern for the environment and the impact on the environment.
In conclusion, working in the offshore sector is not only a physical and technical challenge, but also an opportunity to develop in a dynamically growing industry. Adequate preparation — both professionally and personally — is the key to success in this field.
